An aerospace company committed to building a more sustainable future is working tirelessly to reduce its carbon footprint. Initiatives include investing in energy efficient technology, increasing renewable energy sources, and collaborating with partners to reduce waste. When company leaders decided to build upon current efforts through the establishment of a formal corporate sustainability program, the company turned to Trinity Consultants (Trinity) for help.

Challenge

Trinity, who was already assisting the client with water and waste permitting, auditing, and related environmental programmatic needs, was engaged to conduct a materiality assessment, determine key areas of environmental impact across operations, develop greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation strategies, and deliver sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) training.

Additionally, Trinity developed site-specific environmental sustainability implementation plans as well as a corporate environmental sustainability program framework for maintenance.

While the client had taken steps to reduce the carbon footprint of its core aerospace operations, the company also wanted to ensure that activities associated with its development, manufacturing, and test sites were just as environmentally friendly. Because several of the sites were in remote locations across the United States, each faced unique sustainability challenges as a result.

Solutions

The client needed to ensure that employees understood and supported the sustainability framework, and any mitigation measures under consideration. In addition, because the client would be building an environmental sustainability program from the ground up, the company needed to ensure all necessary pieces were in place, from a governance structure to site-specific opportunities for decarbonization and more.

Trinity’s Sustainability and Assurance team began by visiting the client’s various sites to understand each facility’s unique operations. Partnering closely with site leads and corporate leadership, Trinity conducted environmental aspects and impacts analyses to identify the most material operational aspects and impacts at each respective site. Upon identifying key impact areas related to GHG emissions, energy, water, and waste, Trinity developed matrices to guide conversations with site leaders regarding potential mitigation measures. The conversations informed the enterprise-wide corporate environmental sustainability program framework and site-specific implementation plans designed to guide the successful implementation of the client’s environmental sustainability program.

Services Performed

The team built a comprehensive GHG inventory covering direct and indirect emissions, designed tools and processes for global data collection and validation, and trained internal teams to ensure consistent reporting and drive future improvements.

Results

Trinity leveraged its expertise in environmental engineering, as well as extensive knowledge of various industrial sectors, to create the client’s environmental sustainability program. The Trinity team provided industry benchmarks and detailed best practices related to governance, which led to the client hiring a dedicated director of sustainability. Trinity also outlined next steps, including establishing a baseline for environmental aspects, to track and measure the success of the proposed mitigation measures over time.

Throughout the process, Trinity worked closely with employees across the organization to gain buy-in and increase ownership of the program. By leading ESG training for employees, Trinity ensured all participants had a solid understanding of ESG indexes, reporting, and more.

Together, these activities helped the client understand the impact of its operations and determine a path forward to build a cohesive environmental sustainability program.
