College Square, a landmark mixed-use project in Dublin city centre, posed significant acoustic challenges due to its busy urban location and diverse uses. AWN Consulting, a Trinity Consultants team, provided comprehensive acoustic design services that helped the project achieve LEED Platinum & BREEAM certification. The result is a high-performance, sustainable development that sets a new standard for city-centre acoustic comfort in both commercial and residential spaces.

 

Challenge

AWN Consulting, a Trinity Consultants team, has provided expert acoustic design services for College Square, a landmark mixed-use development located in the heart of Dublin city centre. Set to become a defining feature of Dublin’s skyline, the project has been designed to an exceptionally high standard and has achieved LEED Platinum & BREEAM certification, reflecting its commitment to sustainability and occupant wellbeing.

Located on a high-profile corner site at Tara Street, Poolbeg Street, and Townsend Street, College Square comprises 540,000 sq ft of modern Grade A office space, delivered across 10 floors over a double basement. The development also features 54 high-end apartments and 17,000 sq ft of retail space, contributing to a vibrant and active streetscape. This contemporary development is designed to meet the highest environmental and performance standards, with a focus on creating premium commercial and residential environments in a prime city-centre location.

Solutions

AWN’s expert acoustic team tackled the project’s challenges through a multi-faceted strategy. They conducted detailed baseline noise and vibration surveys to understand site conditions and inform the design process. Specifications were developed for high-performance façades and glazing to protect interiors from traffic noise. Advanced noise control measures for mechanical and electrical plant ensured compliance with planning and prevented disruption to residents and neighbours. AWN also designed robust internal sound insulation between office spaces, apartments, and retail units to support privacy and wellbeing. Final acoustic testing confirmed that design targets and Building Regulations were fully met.

Services Performed

The team carried out noise and vibration impact assessments, including baseline monitoring, to inform façade and glazing acoustic design. They developed noise control measures for mechanical and electrical plant, designed internal sound insulation for residential, office, and retail spaces, and performed acoustic testing on completion to verify compliance.

College Square now stands as a flagship example of sustainable urban development with the highest standards of acoustic comfort. AWN’s solutions enabled the project to achieve LEED Platinum certification, setting a benchmark for acoustic performance in Dublin’s city centre.
