Philadelphia’s uCity Square has become a new hub for research and innovation as Drexel University partners with Wexford Science + Technology to develop an academic tower that brings students, academics, experts, and entrepreneurs together to foster ideas and drive innovation. The interdisciplinary facility consolidates Drexel’s research and education programs under one roof and houses the College of Nursing and Health Professions, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies, and the College of Medicine. To support this environment, our team designed flexible spaces that integrate state-of-the-art AV technology, interactive features, and collaborative tools to accommodate diverse uses and encourage interaction within the campus community.

Challenge

Cerami, part of Trinity Consultants, was challenged to provide Drexel University Tower students, academics, and other visitors with a more meaningful and immersive experience on campus.

In this new generation where students are accustomed to consuming media and digital information electronically, they now seek more meaningful and immersive experiences in their education. We aim to enrich the learning experience through a combination of thoughtfully designed spaces and seamless technology.

Solutions

Active learning areas are equipped with 4K video displays, ceiling-mounted dual projectors with projection screens, and digital panels featuring touch-screen capabilities that allow students and instructors to easily share content and ideas. Conference rooms include cameras and video conferencing tools to support smooth collaboration and presentations.

Digital signage and interactive video walls that stream information and current events line the halls and public spaces, keeping students, researchers, and guests connected and engaged throughout their time on campus.

Services Performed

The team conducted site noise and vibration assessments near transit lines, developed acoustic control measures for labs and classrooms, and provided design specifications with construction oversight for noise and vibration isolation. Field tests were performed to confirm that performance met the required criteria.

Results

Drexel’s Academic Tower opened on schedule and within budget, delivering high-quality acoustical performance that supports the college’s mission to train the next generation of physicians. The building’s sensitive teaching spaces meet strict noise and vibration criteria, enhancing the overall learning environment.
