Hudson Yards is suspended over an active rail yard and yet you’d never know that 30 Long Island Railroad tracks are running underneath. Lesser known, are the powerful impacts that noise and vibration from a site of this magnitude could have on your health as you live, work or shop in the buildings above.

Challenge

Cerami was asked to provide an acoustical solution that would ensure visitors and tenants of Hudson Yards would never hear or feel the quite active 30 railroad tracks operating below the structure. In addition, Cerami was asked to partner with many world class tenants to build out their interior spaces to continue the Class A interior experience for their customers.

What you do know is that you are in Class A space and that the A also means it’s stellar in everything, especially Acoustics, because Trinity Cerami has been behind the rise of the mega development since its inception. With so much happening in this hot 28-acre neighborhood, the noise level is more than compliant – it’s peaceful. We provided recommendations and guidelines to mitigate noise at the core and shell, as well as fit-out interior spaces for clients such as COACH, SAP, Millbank, and SilverLake Technology Management, making sure this once no-man’s-land is now the soundest neighborhood in NYC.

Solutions

It was only natural, as the base-building acoustical designers, that Cerami would also partner with many of the tenants who were looking for acoustic and technology consulting. With our intimate knowledge of Hudson Yards, inside and out, we helped create the spaces they now call home.

Services Performed

The team designed base-building acoustic solutions to isolate rail noise and vibration, developed detailed mitigation guidelines for core and shell, and partnered with tenants for interior acoustic and technology consulting. Their work ensured Class A sound levels were maintained across offices and retail spaces.

Results

Cerami’s solution delivered not only a noise level that was compliant –Hudson Yards transformed from a once-ignored rail yard to NYC’s most vibrant 28-acre neighborhood — where residents, workers, and shoppers experience a peaceful, high-performance acoustic environment above the city’s busiest rail hub.
