A major lime manufacturing company partnered with Trinity Consultants to conduct a detailed review of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reporting data and identify ways to improve accuracy. The company wanted confidence that its calculations met all applicable regulatory requirements and reflected actual operations.

Challenge

The rapid evolution of climate and carbon regulation worldwide raised concerns among the manufacturer’s board of directors and corporate personnel. The growing depth and breadth of nascent policies, regulations, and programmatic opportunities catalyzed the company’s need for dedicated expert resources to track trends and distill key takeaways of relevance for quarterly board presentations.

As Trinity was intimately familiar with the organization’s operations and had demonstrated expertise as a long-standing environmental consultant, the manufacturer elected to outsource the quarterly reports to Trinity. The starting goal was to proactively track EHS regulatory developments to better assess compliance and financial risk, and to strategically evaluate climate-related risks and opportunities for informed business decision-making.

Solutions

Trinity based the first round of reports on the manufacturer’s existing reporting templates and immediately began to identify opportunities to enhance the content with impactful information. Prior to the subsequent quarter, Trinity expanded the quantity and quality of information using select subscription services, third-party contributors, and industry trade groups. Additionally, an enhanced tracking process automated the speed of the data search. As needed, subject matter experts within Trinity were selected to provide targeted analysis in areas requiring technical or geographic expertise. To provide additional value, Trinity utilized its deep industry experience and first-hand knowledge of the manufacturer’s operations to analyze the potential impacts of regulatory and policy developments to ensure the topics effectively addressed the company’s corporate objectives.

Services Performed

The team reviewed multi-year GHG emissions data, conducted onsite inspections with plant engineers, and reconciled production information with emissions factors. They also improved data management and recordkeeping to enhance accuracy and compliance.

Results

The manufacturer has taken a formal, proactive stance toward global environmental compliance and risk abatement. Trinity produces two board-level reports per quarter; one for carbon emission compliance, used in pricing carbon tax credits and emission reductions, and one for EHS, focused on air quality standards. The company’s staff previously tasked with creating the reports are now free to focus on more critical business activities. Meanwhile, Trinity provides a clear, concise, and timely view of the changing environmental regulatory landscape, shedding light on potential financial opportunities and steering the company away from risk.
