The Tropical Fruit Warehouse, originally built in the 1890s, has been transformed into an iconic development comprising 85,000 sq. ft of office space. The redevelopment included the restoration of the original warehouse building, the addition of two floating, fully glazed office floors that cantilever over the protected structure, and a new six-storey office block. AWN Consulting, a Trinity Consultants team, was brought in to support the project’s acoustic and sustainability objectives.

 

Challenge

The transformation of the Tropical Fruit Warehouse into a modern office space presented significant acoustic challenges. There was no space for rooftop plant on the structure, and a key part of the design was the control of noise from the internal plant rooms that sit between the protected and new structure. Additionally, the busy urban environment, particularly the adjacent road, posed further challenges in the control of noise intrusion.

Solutions

Working closely with the design team, AWN provided comprehensive acoustic design advice to ensure that the shell and core design achieved the relevant acoustic criteria and WELL sustainability credits. This included specifying wall, floor, door, and glazing constructions to achieve the required sound insulation, as well as addressing room acoustics and building services noise.

The team provided acoustic design and simulation, noise and vibration consulting, building services noise control, and advisory services for sustainability and WELL credits.

Results

The successful implementation of these acoustic solutions resulted in a high-quality acoustic environment for the iconic development. The integration of modern acoustic design with the building’s historic features has created a unique and functional workspace that meets contemporary standards.
