On December 16, 2024, Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) released an updated version of MiEnviro Portal that incorporated air permitting and compliance submittals. The move expanded the use of MiEnviro Portal to include air permitting and compliance for the first time. The system has been used for many years for water permitting and reporting. In recent years, the system has been used for annual air emissions reporting as well.
The December 16 rollout represents significant change in air permitting and compliance in Michigan. Michigan facilities will be required to handle all permitting and compliance obligations through MiEnviro moving forward. The MiEnviro site can be accessed via this link. Additional resources are available on the EGLE MiEnviro Portal for Air page here.
Preparing for March 15, 2025 Reporting
The March 15, 2025, reporting deadline for semiannual and annual compliance reports, as well as annual emissions reporting is rapidly approaching. For facilities that previously reported annual emissions through MiEnviro, the facility should already be set up in the system with a known certifier. For facilities new to the system, or with new report certifiers, ensure that certification rights have been assigned ahead of the reporting deadline. This requires submittal of a hard copy of Certifier Agreement Form with an original signature. The approval process can take at least a week, so ensure this is done well ahead of the reporting deadline.
EGLE has assigned required reports for existing sites as “schedules” in the MiEnviro system. Facilities should be able to access their site’s Dashboard in MiEnviro where they will be able to view and access the reports (schedules) EGLE has currently assigned for the site. Sites should review the current list of schedules against their active permits to ensure compliance requirements align with the permit. If there are discrepancies, be sure to follow-up with EGLE to resolve any confusion. Ultimately, the facility’s permit includes the requirements that the site must comply with if there is a discrepancy between the two.
