Is your facility struggling to keep up with evolving industry standards or compliance tools? Trinity Consultants empowers our clients across multiple industrial sectors with cutting-edge solutions for wastewater emission modeling and regulatory compliance. Whether you’re navigating complex regulations or seeking to optimize your facilities treatment systems, Trinity delivers the expertise and technology to support your environmental goals. Trinity’s has modeling tools at their disposal to help facilities accurately quantify emissions for permitting, reporting, identifying high sources of emissions, and more.

Trinity’s specialized Chemical Sector Services (CSS) branch specifically utilizes the wastewater modeling software, Toxchem®, to assist clients in the chemical and refinery sectors with modeling wastewater emissions from onsite wastewater plants or units. With years of experience between enforcement cases, general compliance projects, and regulatory applicability reviews, the CSS team at Trinity combines regulatory expertise with modeling tools like Toxchem® to deliver accurate and actionable insights that help clients stay in compliance and avoid costly penalties.

Toxchem® is a wastewater modeling program developed by Hydromantis as an alternative for the programs WATER 8 and WATER 9, which are now outdated as EPA support for WATER 8/9 has been discontinued. Toxchem® is an improved and updated program that includes mass transfer processes, sorption of contaminants to solids, and a compound database containing critically reviewed physical, chemical and biological properties. Additionally, process units that can be modeled within Toxchem® include, but are not limited to:

  • Equalization Tanks and Ponds,
  • Process Units for API/DAF/DNF/IGF,
  • Biotreatment Units,
  • Clarifier Unit,
  • and Sludge Management Units.

The National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants can be found in 40 CFR Part 63, and these standards provide guidelines for complying with wastewater rules that regulate emissions of semi-volatile and volatile organic compounds (VOC). Toxchem® is included in Appendix C of 40 CFR Part 63 as an acceptable program to estimate wastewater treatment emissions. Toxchem® uses a combination of physical, chemical, and biological process equations to mathematically model air pollutants from wastewater operations. Often, these emissions can be overlooked. Using Trinity’s knowledgeable wastewater staff along with Toxchem® can make manually calculating wastewater emissions a thing of the past.

Trinity’s CSS team has decades or hands-on experience and vast subject-matter expertise in compliance and applicability for facilities that are subject to wastewater management requirements such as 40 CFR Part 60, Subpart QQQ (Standards of Performance for VOC Emissions From Petroleum Refinery Wastewater Systems), 40 CFR Part 61, Subpart FF (Benzene Waste Operations NESHAP) and 40 CFR Part 63, Subparts G (Hazardous Organic Chemical Manufacturing NESHAP) and FFFF (Miscellaneous Organic Chemical Manufacturing NESHAP). Trinity’s CSS team uses Toxchem®, along with a client’s counsel, as an aid to comply with these regulations and estimate wastewater emissions for a facility.

What You Gain with Toxchem® + Trinity:

  • Faster Compliance: Streamlined modeling helps meet EPA deadlines with confidence
  • Reduced Risk: Accurate emission estimates minimize regulatory exposure
  • Custom Solutions: Tailored layouts and inputs for your unique facility
  • Expert Support: Work directly with Trinity’s experienced CSS team
  • Training Available: Empower your team with hands-on Toxchem® training

Toxchem® models use client specific inputs to calculate wastewater treatment emissions. Trinity’s CSS group will work with clients to determine and gather the data necessary to develop Toxchem® models. Wastewater treatment system layouts are customizable within Toxchem® and are built from your site’s unique process and wastewater process units. The layouts can be modeled and customized using icons for process images, labels for processes or streams, connection paths, and colors to represent stream types for easy reference.

Using Toxchem® is a great option for facilities with wastewater treatment systems that are looking to update and clarify historic engineering estimates or are wanting to better understand and/or determine emissions for wastewater treatment units and processes. Toxchem® models can be used to determine potential-to-emit (PTE) operational limits. By varying flow rates and contamination concentrations, the emissions output by the model can verify a facility is operating within its required limits.

Trinity has local and regional modeling experience, allowing for development of beneficial strategies to meet the needs of their clients’ specific projects. Trinity can also provide client specific training for Toxchem® to meet the needs of their clients. Please reach out to Inaas Darrat, Director Chemical Sector Services, for more information on how Toxchem® and how Trinity can help.
