Hazard Communications & GHS FAQs

The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) is a UN-created framework for classifying chemicals and communicating their hazards through standardized SDSs and labels. It helps protect human health and the environment, reduces duplicative testing, and facilitates international trade.

Yes, but with variations. The U.S., Canada, Mexico, EU, Asia, Australia, and many other countries have implemented GHS, though each may adopt different versions or retain country-specific requirements.

Examples include Hazards Not Otherwise Classified (HNOC) in the U.S., biological hazard requirements in Canada, and specific label elements required in the EU, Brazil, and China.

Compliance deadlines have already passed, but SDSs and labels must be updated whenever new information arises that affects chemical hazard classification, protective measures, or response actions.

Annex VIII standardizes information submitted to European Poison Centres. Compliance began in 2021, and manufacturers, suppliers, and EU importers must ensure all required notifications are completed.
