RBC Waterpark Place is a landmark mixed-use tower on Toronto’s waterfront, at the foot of Bay Street in the city’s Financial District. When the Royal Bank of Canada undertook a major tenant fit-up spanning approximately 17 floors of the building, the scope demanded rigorous acoustic assessment to support RBC’s internal compliance standards. Gensler led the interior design of the project, bringing a contemporary workplace vision to one of Canada’s most prominent corporate tenants.

Valcoustics, a Trinity Consultants Canada team, was engaged to provide acoustical engineering services in support of RBC’s Compliance team’s review of the fit-up. Our team’s work ensured that the acoustic performance of the redesigned floors met the standards required by one of Canada’s largest financial institutions.

Vision

For a financial institution of RBC’s scale, the acoustic performance of its workplace is not simply a matter of comfort—it is a compliance consideration. Regulated financial services environments require demonstrable standards of speech privacy and sound isolation, particularly in areas where confidential client information is discussed. A 17-floor fit-up at one of Toronto’s most high-profile office addresses set a high bar for both the design team and the compliance process.

Gensler’s interior design for the project brought a modern, open-plan workplace sensibility to the floors, creating environments that encourage collaboration while meeting the functional requirements of a major bank. Within this framework, acoustic performance across meeting rooms, private offices, and open-plan areas needed to be assessed and verified against RBC’s internal standards.

Partnership

Valcoustics, a Trinity Consultants Canada team, was retained to provide acoustical engineering services in support of RBC’s Compliance team’s review of the fit-up. Our team worked within Gensler’s design framework, assessing acoustic conditions across the occupied floors and providing recommendations to assist the Compliance team in evaluating whether the fit-up met the bank’s performance requirements.

The scale of the project—approximately 17 floors of a major waterfront tower—required a systematic approach to acoustic assessment. Our team’s role was to provide clear, independent acoustic input that could inform the Compliance review and support RBC’s confidence in the performance of its new workspace.

Services Performed

Valcoustics, a Trinity Consultants Canada team, provided acoustical engineering services for the RBC Waterpark Place tenant fit-up, supporting RBC’s Compliance team’s review of the approximately 17-floor project. Our scope included acoustic assessment of meeting rooms, private offices, and open-plan workspace areas across the fit-up, with recommendations to assist the Compliance team in evaluating acoustic performance against the bank’s internal standards for speech privacy, sound isolation, and background noise.

Value-Add

The primary value of our team’s involvement lay in providing RBC’s Compliance team with the acoustic information needed to complete its review. In a regulated financial environment, the ability to demonstrate that a workspace meets defined acoustic standards—for speech privacy, sound isolation, and background noise—is a meaningful compliance asset. Our team provided that assurance across the full extent of the fit-up.

Meeting rooms and private offices within a financial institution require a level of acoustic privacy that goes beyond the norms of a typical commercial fit-up. Our team assessed the acoustic performance of these spaces and provided recommendations where conditions needed to be addressed to meet RBC’s standards. Open-plan office areas were assessed for speech privacy and background noise to ensure they supported focused work alongside the bank’s collaborative workplace model.

The completed fit-up gives RBC a modern, high-performing workspace at one of Toronto’s premier office addresses, with acoustic conditions that have been independently assessed and verified in support of the bank’s compliance obligations. The project reflects the increasingly important role that acoustic performance plays in the design and delivery of workplaces for regulated industries.

Tenants first was their mantra, so we designed the acoustics accordingly, taking into consideration their open design space and philosophy.
