Fish and Fish Habitat Studies
The Trinity Consultants Water & Ecology Environmental Services team has exceptional expertise and experience in the design and implementation of fish and fish habitat studies for a variety of clients with applications ranging from data collection for planning purposes, to environmental monitoring and assessment, to Fisheries Act Authorization. Our scientists have deep expertise with fish habitat evaluation procedures, the links between fish habitat and fish population/community health, and with evaluations of fish health at the individual, population, and community levels.
We commonly apply state-of-the-art science tools in the evaluation of fish health, including the use of genetic, chemical, biochemical, and behavioral tools, to assist with the evaluation of fish growth, reproduction, and energy storage. We also conduct fish community characterization, and fish population size estimation using a variety of collection techniques and fish marking/tagging approaches in lakes, wetlands, rivers, and streams.
We have built a reputation in the industry for successful implementation of fish studies by applying expertise in fish behavior, optimal species-specific and site-specific capture techniques, and fish dissection, tissue collection, and tissue measurement skills.

How We Can Help
Our team has unparalleled expertise in the completion of fish and fish habitat studies to support authorization required under the Canadian Fisheries Act. Under Section 35(2) of the Act, fish habitat loss or alteration requires characterization of the quality and quantity of the loss, and the development of a scientifically-defensible offsetting plan. We have successfully supported numerous clients through this process by performing habitat assessments and designing and/or implementing offsetting measures. For example, we completed all fisheries evaluations and planning for one of Canada’s first full lake transplants.
Specific types of fish and fish habitat studies that we can perform include:
- Fish habitat classification and mapping
- Evaluation of effects at individual, population, and community levels
- Fish population size estimates and assessment
- Fish movement/utilization tracking and assessment
- Offsetting plans, initiatives, implementation, and monitoring
- Fish removal/relocation plans and implementation
- Genetic (stock) analysis
- Spawning surveys
- Impingement and entrainment assessment/predictions
