Trinity Consultants offers a broad range of environmental services to aid a wide spectrum of companies and industries. One growing branch of environmental services Trinity can provide is performing wastewater air emissions modeling for facilities including, but not limited to, petroleum refineries and chemical manufacturing plants. Trinity uses the preferred modeling software, Toxchem®, to aid clients in modeling their wastewater treatment plant air emissions for permitting, reporting, identifying emissions, and more.

What is Toxchem®?

Toxchem® is a wastewater modeling program that was developed by Hydromantis, a Canadian software developing firm. The program was developed in the early 1990s and was meant to be an alternative for the programs WATER 8 and WATER 9. Support for WATER 8/9 has since been discontinued, but Toxchem® is an improved and updated program that includes mass transfer processes, sorption of contaminants to solids, and a compound database containing critically-reviewed physical, chemical and biological properties. When provided with accurate inputs of equipment operating data and wastewater stream data, Toxchem is an accurate, trusted source for quantification of wastewater treatment plant emissions from all unit types.

Advantages of Toxchem®

Toxchem® has many features, as well as many benefits for users. Overall, Toxchem® has:

  • A user-friendly interface,
  • Helpful tools, such as sensitivity analyses and back-solving functions,
  • The option to use flexible units throughout the software,
  • Updated database of critically reviewed properties,
  • and the capability to output results directly to excel.

The Toxchem® model uses client specific inputs to calculate wastewater treatment emissions. When utilizing Toxchem®, Trinity will work with a site to determine and gather the necessary inputs to run the model. Information Trinity will gather to run the model will include the following:

  • Influent hydrocarbon concentrations or concentrations at one point within the treatment system, based on historic or recent wastewater sampling data.
  • Influent flow rates, and
  • Relevant process design specifications of equipment that is part of the wastewater treatment system.

Once the inputs have been collected, Trinity will build a layout of the wastewater treatment system in Toxchem® that includes the site-specific process units and stream inputs. Layouts are customizable based on icons for process images, labels for processes or streams, connection paths, and colors to represent stream types, providing effective visualize of the system that is easy to build and update. Process units in Toxchem® include:

  • Sewers/Drops/Drains/List Stations
  • Equalization Tanks and Ponds,
  • API Separators and DAF units,
  • Biotreatment equipment,
  • Clarifiers, and
  • Sludge Management.

Toxchem® is a great option for those who are having difficulties updating or running WATER 8/9 models, for those wanting to update and clarify historic engineering estimates, or for anyone that is wanting to have a better understanding of and/or determination of emissions for wastewater treatment plants and processes.

Trinity has local and regional modeling experience, allowing for the development of beneficial strategies to meet the needs of their clients’ specific projects. Trinity can also provide client specific training for Toxchem® to meet the needs of their clients.
